Join us to listen to some poetry—or share some writing of your own—at Poetry in the Boro at Cultivate Coworking on Sunday evening, 9/10. Our feature will be Sandee Gertz, author of the poetry collection The Pattern Maker’s Daughter from Bottom Dog Press. Read more about Sandee below.
Cultivate Coworking is located at 107 W. Lytle St. and has plenty of free street parking available on Lytle and College. Doors open for mingling and refreshments at 5:30 PM. The feature will be at 6:00, with open mic to follow.
About the open mic
Open mic readers can share poetry or spoken word: 2 poems or four minutes, whichever comes first. Reading a favorite poem by another writer is fine, too.
We ask that readers be prepared to keep their pieces “PG-13” depending on our venue and audience, which sometimes includes younger people.
About our feature
Sandee Gertz is a native of Western Pennsylvania and the author of The Pattern Maker’s Daughter, a poetry collection, published by Bottom Dog Press in 2012. She has published her poetry, essays, and memoir pieces in literary journals for over 25 years, including Green Mountains Review, Gargoyle, Poet Lore, Northern Appalachia Review, Wildroof Journal, and more. She was recognized as one of 16 Working Class Poets in World Literature Today and is a Sandburg-Livesay Poetry Award winner, and more recently has won the Mary Jean Irion Prize in Poetry. Mary Biddinger described her award-winning poem, “The Leavings” as feeling like “an entire novel or memoir, projecting the reader across time and distance, with narrative fragments connected by dashes that feel like stitches of silk thread….” She is currently working to complete a novel and teaches English and Creative Writing at Cumberland University as an Associate Professor.
Challenge words
Here are our challenge words, chosen by our community (with the Bloom Stage “Food for Thought” show in mind). If you like, write a new piece to share that includes one, some, or ALL of these words:
steam | lime | baste | chew | spice | desserts | draconian | bitter | vainglory | harvest
